Overall planning competitive dialogue 1st prize

The development of the campus up to the year 2050 is to be defined in a strategic target planning. How could the historically significant campus with its pavilion hospital structure be further developed as a future-oriented campus and accommodate medical space of approx. 120'000 m2?

The design aims to unite the coexistence of the history and the future of the Charité into a holistic concept. The historic campus with its buildings and open spaces will be clearly defined and strengthened. Next to it a new clinic is being built on Luisenstraße. The new building volumes are precisely set and refer to urban edges. They stand confidently in the urban context integrating themselves into the existing surroundings by adopting - among other things - the Berlin eaves.

In the urban narrative the contradiction between difficult-to-reconcile design principles of an ideal form versus the urban body is resolved.

The design proposes to conceive the supporting structure of all new buildings as a wooden construction. The 16-storey clinic would be the first clinic of this size made of wood.
